Summer Bird-Cage, A.

Drabble, Margaret. A Summer Bird-Cage. London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, (1962).

8vo.; cloth; dust-jacket.

First edition. Signed by Drabble on the title page, and annotated by her throughout, primarily on the endpapers. She writes sketches the history of the composition and publication of this title, noting, “It wouldn’t be so easy in 2012.” On the copyright page – “Copyright 1962 Margaret Swift” – she addresses her authorship: “This copyright line caused me trouble. I should have stuck with Drabble throughout – but Swift is a much nicer name!” Among the notes on the rear endpapers are these “observations” upon rereading this in 2012:

Drink-driving acceptable
Smoking acceptable
Hair Pins – Why so many?
Abortion illegal then
Too much about clothes—
Beatniks – Why?
