Eye of the Story, The, proofs.

ADVANCE UNCORRECTED PROOF
INSCRIBED TO RAY ROBERTS

Welty, Eudora. The Eye of the Story. New York: Random House, 1978.

8vo.; red wrappers with photocopied title and publication information affixed with tape.

Advance uncorrected proof. A presentation copy, inscribed on title page to Ray Roberts, Welty’s editor at Viking: For Ray Roberts/with best wishes/Eudora Welty; with Roberts’s bookplate inside the upper panel. Welty and Roberts became friends in the early 1970s, having been introduced by Howard Moss at The New Yorker, and Welty’s childhood friend, the Broadway conductor Lehman Engel.

This proof of The Eye of the Story varies slightly in its formatting and typographic details from the novel’s first edition/first printing. Starting from the first page, the pagination differs due to typesetting; the (hand-paginated) proof ends on p. 364, the published version on p. 355. The proof also lacks the ornamental chapter/section labels found in the first edition and is missing a copyright page, reading simply “copyright & permissions to come.”
