Gilman, Charlotte Perkins. What Diantha Did [CPG Family Archive]. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1912.

8vo, 262 pp.; endpapers show mild offsetting and dustiness; front foretip of binding bumped; binding rubbed with light wear to crown and foot; smooth maroon cloth stamped in gold front, with title, author and publisher’s device; spine with title, author and publisher; about very good.

First English edition. Inscribed by the author at the front flyleaf: C.P. Gilman. / 380 Worthington St./ Norwich Town, Conn. [in brown ink]/ Nov. 24th, 1926 [in pencil]. Gilman had a happy relationship with the English publisher. In 1895 T. Fisher Unwin issued In This Our World, the author’s first book, a book of verse, in 1895, giving the title its first cloth and first regular trade publication. (The title had been published by subscription by friends of hers in Oakland, a form of the book which is exceedingly rare.) When she visited England the following year, Gilman had the pleasure of finding “a far higher reputation than at home” due to Unwin’s efforts. The long-lived relationship with T.Fisher Unwin contrasts with the various American publishers Gilman tried and found wanting. Scharnhorst 540.
