Poems of Child Labor" pamphlet.

(Gilman, Charlotte Perkins). National Child Labor Committee. Pamphlet: “Poems of Child Labor.” New York, N.Y.: National Child Labor Committee, 1924.

Pamphlet: 5-3/8 x 7-7/8,” 49pp; + “Index of Titles” and “Index of Authors”; soft dark brown wrappers with title within thin rectangular rules at front panel; minor wear with a touch of chipping to head and foot of spine and some roughness along spine itself; very good.

First edition. Poems on the issue of child labor by Robert Frost (“Out! Out!”), John Addington Symonds (“In the Inn at Berchtesgaden”), Mary D. Johnston (“Little Kindred”), Louis Untermeyer (“Children of the Tenement”) and others. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s two-verse contribution is untitled, but succinct and to the point: “We are the Wisest, Strongest Race — / Loud may our praise be sung ! —/ The only animal alive / That lives upon its young!” Rare—the limited nature of the publication and distribution of this little volume together with its vulnerable format likely meant that relatively few copies survive.
