Ladies' Medical Guide, The.
An Early Gynecological Guide
[Health issues]. Pancoast, S., M.D. The Ladies Medical Guide: A Complete Instructor and Counsellor, Embracing A Full and Exhaustive Account of the Structure and Functions of the Reproductive Organs; the Diseases of Females and Children; with their Causes, Symptoms and Treatment; the Toilet considered in reference to Female Health, Beauty and Longevity, etc., etc. With An Appendix Containing Startling Facts in Plain Words for Mothers and the Young…Philadelphia: John E. Potter and Company, [1865?].
8vo.; frontispiece illustration of the author, original tissue guard; heavily illustrated with over 100 gynecological images throughout; red cloth, front cover stamped decoratively in black, spine stamped in gilt; inner front hinge tender, starting, affecting some pages (loose but present); otherwise a good copy.
First edition of this encyclopedic work on the female reproductive system, consisting of over 600 pages of text, with a glossary and index. No doubt this book was considered shocking for its day; today, it reads like a dry medical text interspersed, bizarrely, with some hair, skin, and other beauty advice.
A nice survival of one of a stream of such books from the era.
