Likely the first edition of this pamphlet promoting the medicine Caulocorea, an “elegant Elixir” that is claimed to prevent miscarriages, act as a uterine tonic, ease the burden of puberty in young women, and even cure impotency in men, as discovered by J.W. Lowell, M.D., of Portland, Maine. The pamphlet explains that Caulocorea “contain[s] the active principles of several plants that possess in a high degree superior medical properties, so combined as to greatly increase their antispasmodic and tonic powers, making it far superior to any single drug.” With nine pages of printed patient testimonials by women and men on pp.22-32. Text on the lower panel notes that the medication is priced at $1.00, is available by “Physician’s Prescriptions only,” and is distributed in fifteen cities nationwide.
