Making of Americans, The.

One of Thirty Copies

Inscribed

Stein, Gertrude. The Making of Americans. Being a History of a Family’s Progress. Written by Gertrude Stein 1906-1908. (Paris: Contact Editions / Three Mountains Press, 1925.)

4to.; orange wrappers, stamped in black; specially bound (without the spine) in half-morocco, stamped in gilt. In a specially made quarter-morocco slipcase.

First edition; one of approximately fifteen copies specially bound for subscribers, 500 copies the entire edition. Wilson A6, estimating the subscribers copies at 30; the fact that they were bound as ordered, and the scarcity with which they appear in institutional collections and in the trade, both suggest a radically smaller number.

A presentation copy, inscribed in the upper right of the first three binder’s blanks: May Jeanne and Cook / be as happy / [2] in their new house / as it is justly / [3] and as they deserve / which is saying a / very very great deal. / With love / from / Gertrude.
