ARCHIVE: Original dust-jacket art for The Wizard of Earthsea Trilogy - three drawings, appx. 15 x 21 inches each. With related correspondence.
Original Artwork
(LeGuin, Ursula.) The Wizard of Earthsea Trilogy. Original Artwork. Ca. 1971.
Original artwork for the three dust-jackets to the first English edition of this trilogy, together with a letter from artist David Smee and one from the publisher, Gollancz, to Smee. Smee executed the three jacket designs to praise from LeGuin, whose compliments were forwarded by her publisher. In 1972 she wrote directly to Smee, in the present letter:
I wish I could tell you what a perfect pleasure it has been to see the books coming out in format, with your magnificent drawings, how grateful I am to you for your fidelity to the text, and how much I admire the force and delicacy of your work? It is a marvel and a delight to see with the eye what one had only seen with the mind’s eye.
