Garden Primer pamphlet (2 copies).

GARDEN PRIMER How to plant and Care for a Vegetable Garden. [New York City]: [Mayor Mitchel's Food Supply Committee], [April, 1917].

Pamphlet - 5-7/8 x 8-15/16", 8pp; stapled self-wrappers. At the front cover is pasted a printed yellow label with the legend: “From / the Albany Branch / of the / N.Y. State Woman Suffrage Party”. Fine. With U.S. entry into World War I, the government began to encourage Americans to grow their own vegetables; this is a very succinct, useful guide to how to prepare a garden plot and when to plant various vegetables. The New York State Woman Suffrage Party allied themselves with the war effort – as is evident by their distribution of this pamphlet. The NAWSA and its state affiliates were arduous that the public recognize their patriotism and the importance of women to the war effort. The first time we have seen a non-suffrage item adapted and distributed by suffragists. An unusual World War I suffrage piece.
