Pankhurst, Christabel. Seeing the Future. New York and London: Harper and Brothers, 1929.
8vo.; orange cloth; lightly rubbed; some wear to extremities; spine darkened.
First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper: To Rangeley/ With love from/ the Author/ Christabel Pankhurst. With a handful of negligible emendations throughout, presumably by Pankhurst. Over the course of 17 chapters, Pankhurst seeks to prove the validity of Christian prophecy and show that science and faith are not at odds, considering the accuracy of many of the Bible’s predictions and explanations concerning the natural world. According to Pankhurst, the link between science and theology has existed since the middle ages, and most principles of modern science are derived from the basic belief in the interconnectedness of all living things, as described in the Bible. Pankhurst encourages her readers to look no further than scripture for the answers to their questions about the universe since science “for all its merits and marvels, is temporary and imperfect in its conclusions” (p. 5).
