Dream of a Common Language, The.

Rich, Adrienne. The Dream Of A Common Language, Poems 1974-1977. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, (1979).

8vo; beige wove cloth stamped in gold at the spine; beige dust jacket printed in red and black; top edge stained red; front flap clipped at the lower edge (as customary), else fine.

First edition. Inscribed to Susan Sharman, fellow feminist, at the title page, For Susan, whose language has meant so much to me, / With love, Adrienne [underscored].

The title refers to Rich's contention that to break free of male-prescribed conventions, women need to "name the world," that is, create a new common language and "explode the oppressor's language." Continuing the themes of Of Woman Born, The Dream Of A Common Language explores relationships among women and their "spirit-sisters of the past."
