Beside the Still Waters.

[Judaica]. Simon, Lady [Rachel]. Beside the Still Waters. Reflections on the Book of Psalms. Illustrated by Parallel Verses from Other Portions of the Scriptures. London: Greenberg & Co., 1899.

8vo.; light offsetting to endpapers; edges foxed; blue cloth, extremities bumped and faded, spine rubbed.

First edition of this uncommon compendium of commentary on the Psalms. Paired with each reflection is another Biblical verse, “to present that harmony of thought and spirit which is exhibited throughout the sacred Scriptures.” Simon also writes in her preface about her concern that despite their presence in services “the religious thoughts” the Psalms embody “are not always apprehended.” She indicates that her dissatisfaction with previous Psalm commentary derives from their Christian bent; in contrast, her work is intended to appeal to a wide audience. While Simon’s thoughts on the Psalms are of interest in and of themselves, her book is also a record of the attempts of a public figure to explain her religious beliefs.
