First edition, first issue of Stein’s best-known work, a biography of the woman who had been her constant companion since 1909; in the black and white photographic dust-jacket advertising Virginia Woolf’s Flush on the rear flap. 5400 copies, divided among three issues defined by cloth and endpapers. The Literary Guild edition and first British edition appeared later that same year. With sixteen black and white illustrations throughout, including a frontispiece photograph by Man Ray. A difficult book to procure in such lovely condition.
